Futures vs Forex Prop Firms: Which Account Type Fits Your Trading?

Futures and forex prop firm comparisonFutures

“Prop firm” now covers two very different products. One is usually a forex/CFD evaluation on MT5, cTrader, or similar. The other is a futures program on platforms such as Tradovate or NinjaTrader, often with CME-style contracts and a trailing drawdown.

Traders bounce between them because both sell a path to a funded account. The rulebooks, costs, and failure modes are not the same. Choose the market first, then the brand.

What you are actually buying

Forex / CFD prop firms typically sell a multi-step or instant evaluation on CFDs. You trade FX pairs, indices, metals, and sometimes crypto. Drawdown may be static or trailing. News rules vary widely — some allow high-impact events, others block a window around them.

Futures prop firms sell access to futures markets (indexes, bonds, metals, energy, micro contracts). Position sizing is in contracts, not lots. Daily loss limits and trailing drawdowns are common. Consistency or “best day” rules show up more often than on classic two-step FX evaluations.

If you already have a playbook on NAS100 CFDs, a MES futures account is not an automatic upgrade. The product, session, and risk model change.

Filter the comparator by platform and account model rather than by which logo is loudest this month.

Rules that differ in practice

Watch these when you compare a futures shop to a forex shop:

  • Drawdown math: trailing EOD vs intraday vs static from starting balance
  • News: futures firms may still restrict trading around events; FX firms often publish explicit blackout minutes
  • Overnight / weekend: futures have defined sessions; FX evaluations may forbid weekend holding
  • Scaling: adding size after payout vs a separate scaling plan on FX
  • Reset cost: failing a futures combine can be a cheap reset or a full repurchase — read the fee table
  • Payout path: some futures brands pay via specific processors and have a first-payout waiting period

None of these are “better.” They are constraints. A scalper who needs news candles will hate a blackout. A systems trader who wants micros and a combine-style drawdown will hate a two-step FX target that does not match their stats.

Platform and data are part of the cost

Futures accounts often need a platform license, exchange data, or a specific broker connection. Forex evaluations usually include the trading platform in the challenge fee.

Add those extras to the true cost of the first month, next to the evaluation price and any discount code. A cheaper combine that requires paid data can exceed a CFD challenge that looks more expensive on the comparison card.

Who each type tends to fit

Lean forex/CFD if you:

  • Already execute on MT5 / cTrader / MatchTrader
  • Trade FX majors, gold, or index CFDs
  • Want a familiar two-step or one-step profit target
  • Care about news-trading permissions as a first-class filter

Lean futures if you:

  • Trade index or commodity futures (or want to)
  • Prefer contract-based sizing and a combine / evaluation built for that
  • Accept trailing drawdowns and tighter daily loss limits
  • Are willing to set up the required platform and data feed

If you are unsure, do not buy both “to test.” Paper the session and the drawdown math first, then pay for one evaluation that matches the playbook.

How to compare them on FindBestProp

  1. Decide futures vs forex from your current strategy
  2. Filter firms by platform and news/overnight rules
  3. Open two or three firm reviews and read drawdown plus payout terms
  4. Only then look at price and promo codes
  5. Checkout on the official site

Examples in the current catalog include mixed FX/CFD brands such as FTMO and FundedNext, and futures-oriented names such as Topstep. Those pages are summaries. The legal terms are on each firm’s website.

The goal is not to pick a side of the internet argument. It is to stop paying for an evaluation built for a market you do not trade. Start on the comparison table with the market filter that matches your book.
